Hong Kong’s Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum (SYSM) in Mid-Levels has concluded an extensive renovation, reopening to the public on November 7 and immediately debuting a major exhibition that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Chinese statesman’s death. The landmark institution, initially established in 2006 to honor the life and political career of Sun Yat-sen, had temporarily closed in May 2024 for essential maintenance and significant upgrades to its exhibition spaces. Visitors can now explore enhanced galleries and a touring showcase featuring invaluable artifacts tracing the revolutionary’s intellectual and historical ties to the Greater Bay Area.
Commemorating a Legacy
The centerpiece of the reopening is the special exhibition, “From Healing Patients to Saving a Nation – Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.” This limited-time engagement offers a profound look into the formative years and ideological evolution of Dr. Sun, highlighting his strong connections to the region that significantly shaped his revolutionary vision. Following successful stops in Zhongshan and Macau, the exhibition has arrived in Hong Kong for its final showing, running through March 31, 2026. Remarkably, the museum is offering free admission to all visitors for the duration of this exhibit.
The display features a collection of over 60 artifacts, historical documents, and vintage photographs, many of which vividly illustrate Dr. Sun’s personal and political links to Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. Key items on view include letters, inscriptions, a compelling photograph of the Hou Keng Reading Society, and a historic glass negative featuring the “Four Great Desperados,” a group of close revolutionary associates.
Deeper Dive into Sun’s Philosophy
Beyond the physical exhibits, the museum is scheduling a series of activities designed to provide deeper context into Sun Yat-sen’s enduring legacy. Two public lectures are scheduled, featuring esteemed scholars from Hong Kong and Macau. These academic discussions will delve into his political vision for China’s future and explore the history of his family in Macau. The talks are set for November 29 and December 13.
Upcoming Workshops and Events
The SYSM is also creating opportunities for public engagement through hands-on workshops that complement the historical themes. On November 8 and November 16, visitors can participate in the “Kom Tong Hall under the Moonlight” workshop, where participants will learn to create festive lunar lamps. This activity organically ties into the overarching themes of the special exhibition, merging history with cultural craft.
The successful reopening of the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum ensures that this vital historical resource remains accessible and relevant, offering residents and tourists alike a comprehensive understanding of a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history. The enhancements to the facility ensure its role as a permanent educational landmark in the heart of Hong Kong.
